After hours veterinary care
Dotti lives on the farm and farm dogs ride in utes. Unfortunately, Dotti came off the back and fractured her femur.
It takes a bit of energy to fracture a femur. These are very painful injuries that snap the femoral bone and the broken ends of the bones cause a lot of trauma to the soft tissues of the quadricep and hamstring muscles.
Poor Dotti was in a lot of pain with broken bones and lacerated muscle.
Dr Rob used a rod-plate technique for this repair. Plates are very good at resisting compression and rotation but they don’t resist bending forces very well and Dotti is a young and very active dog. We decided to also place a pin to prevent the plate from bending.
We achieved perfect alignment and anatomical reduction. Dotti healed quickly and is running around the fields of Collie with her perfect four legs.
